Sociology - Immigration - 1606 Words
Immigration is the movement of non-native people in order to settle in a different place or country. People move out of their country of origin for many reasons. Whether it is for a better job, better education, or simply to be with loved ones, immigrants have come to the United States with dreams of living a better life. The United States is none other than a make up of immigrants from diverse countries. Immigrants have been coming to the United States since its founding and have shaped the way this country is today. Some immigrants pursue the legal route ââ¬â getting a visa in order to work for the status of a citizen while others illegally enter the country and risk being detained and deported. It is estimated there are approximately 11.7â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Not only are immigrants benefitting our country economically, but also they are assimilating well into American culture. On average, immigrants are more assimilated now than they ever were since the 1980s (Vigdor 2013). Because these immigrants were assimilating now more than ever, itââ¬â¢s a sign or progress for our country. There are some, however, that do not agree with this assertion. Samuel Huntington, a political scientist, disagrees with the idea that immigrants are assimilating. He thinks that out nation is becoming ââ¬Å"two peoples and two culturesâ⬠(Huntington pg. 1). Huntington claims in his article ââ¬Å"The Hispanic Threatâ⬠that immigrants are not assimilating language and do not have patriotism. He focuses on the majority immigrant group in the United States, Hispanics, and explains how ââ¬Å"in 2000, more than 28 million people in the United States spoke Spanish at home, and of those 28 million, 13.8 million spoke English worse rather than very wellâ⬠(Huntington pg. 5). Huntington, and others who share his beliefs, think that as Spanish culture and language increases in the United States, the more committed Hispanics will be to their ethnic identity, not assimilating to the Anglo-Protestant culture America was built on (Huntington). Merchant of Venice Essay Free Essays
Merchant of Venice Essay The Merchant of Venice is a Shakespearian play whose plot is centered around love and loss. Throughout the play Shakespeare satirizes Jewish stereotypes and depicts acts of extreme bigotry, this has lead to a significant amount of debate as to whether or not Shakespeare was antiemetic. However when one makes a detailed analysis of the text it becomes increasingly evident that Shakespeare holds a very biased view of the Jewish people. We will write a custom essay sample on Merchant of Venice Essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now Throughout the story, Shylock is tormented by shallow Christians whom Shakespeare portrays as protagonists, and Shylock himself is made into the picture of the timeââ¬â¢s Jewish stereotype. Through his characters, Shakespeare deepens and encourages the timeââ¬â¢s anti-Jewish sentiment. Throughout the play, Shakespeare glorifies the Christians who depersonalize and alienate Shylock by refusing to use his given name. Instead, they call him ââ¬Å"the Jewâ⬠, ââ¬Å"the villain Jewâ⬠, ââ¬Å"this currish Jewâ⬠, ââ¬Å"impenetrable curâ⬠, ââ¬Å"harsh Jewâ⬠, ââ¬Å"infidelâ⬠, ââ¬Å"cruel devilâ⬠, and ââ¬Å"the devil in the likeness of the Jewâ⬠. And the Christians of Venice do not stop at verbal abuse; they ââ¬Å"spit upon [his] Jewish gabardine,â⬠¦[voided their] rheum upon [his] beard And [footed him] as [they would] spurn a stranger curâ⬠(Shakespeare 14). Even when Shylock speaks out in his own defense by quoting scripture, he is rebuked by Antonio who replies, ââ¬Å"The devil can cite Scripture for his purpose. / An evil soul producing holy witness/ Is like a villain with a smiling cheek,/ A goodly apple rotten at the heart:/ O, what a goodly outside falsehood hath! â⬠(Shakespeare 14). It is standard practice for Christians to defend their beliefs or actions by citing scripture so with just that single line, Shakespeare strips Jews on both the inside and outside of his fictional work of there only way to argue back. Shakespeare depicts these heinous acts while making them sound routine, as if they are nothing out of the ordinary; he even rewards these undeserving characters for their rotten behavior by having them live happily ever after. Shakespeare reinforces Jewish stereotypes all through the play, particularly the ones about greed. Shakespeare made it so that there could be no denying Shylockââ¬â¢s passion for accumulating wealth. Shylock says to his daughter, Jessica, that ââ¬Å"I did dream of moneybags last nightâ⬠(Shakespeare 28). After Jessica raids those moneybags and her fatherââ¬â¢s store of jewels to abscond with Lorenzo, Salanio tells his companion Salarino that he heard Shylock wandering the streets crying ââ¬Å"â⬠¦My daughter! O my ducats! O my daughter! / Fled with a Christian! O my Christian ducats! / Justice! the law! my ducats, and my daughter! /A sealed bag, two sealed bags of ducats,/ Of double ducats, stolen from me by my daughter! / Fled with a Christian! O my Christian ducats! / Justice! the law! my ducats, and my daughter! â⬠(Shakespeare 35). These lines depict Shylock as a man so consumed by his love of money that he cares more for his ducats than he does for his daughter as Shakespeare furthers the stereotype of Jewish greed. Shakespeare may not have written The Merchant of Venice with the sole purpose of slandering Jews, but that does not stop him from vilifying them at every turn. At the trial, he glorifies Portia who speaks eloquently of the need for clemency and compassion in her ââ¬Å"quality of mercyâ⬠courtroom speech, after which she and her friends promptly humiliate Shylock, ruin him financially, and force him to accept Christianity. Shakespeare depicts her doing all of this with such grace and dignity that the reader just cannot help but feel that Shylock deserves his punishment even though he has done nothing wrong. (Shakespeare 68-71) Finally, Shakespeare further rewards the Jewsââ¬â¢ persecutors when, after the trial, without the slightest prick of conscience, the Christians run off to Belmont ââ¬â a kind of way station between this world and heaven ââ¬â to partake in the pleasures of the idle highborn and wealthy. They have their pound of flesh, Shylockââ¬â¢s heart. They also have his daughter, a convert to Christianity. In the end, Shylock becomes a victim of a perverse world, a victim of people who mislead, misuse and prejudge him, and force him to take a desperate stand and lose everything all for his one singular crime, the crime of being a devout member of the Jewish faith. The Christians, meanwhile, live on happily ever after. At the end, while Christians exult in their victory at Belmont, one can imagine Shylock walking the streets of the Rialto or the Jewish ghetto looking for his dignity and the glow of a friendly candle. And yet this play is not a tragedy; far from it, it is a comedy in which the Jews are the perpetual butt of the jokes. Shakespeare tricks the reader into laughing at the poor victimized Jew. The primary objection to portraying Shakespeare as antiemetic comes from the famous ââ¬Å"I am a Jewâ⬠speech. It could be argued that these famous lines indicate that Shakespeare is trying to shed light on the mistreatment of the Jewish population, and it is true that these lines argue that Jews and Christians should be treated equally. (Shakespeare 42) This argument however is irrelevant when compared to the amount of unapologetic bigotry that makes up the rest of the play. In the context of the text one passage does nothing to change the awful ways Jews are portrayed at treated all throe the work. Shakespeare may not have been unusually bigoted for the times he lived in, and he may not have recognized the themes of anti-Semitism in this work ââ¬â in fact he may have seen these themes as nothing more than another layer of realism being woven into the play. However, that does not change the fact that there is no way that Shakespeare could write so harshly about a group of people without having some pretty extreme biases of his own. In the Merchant of Venice, Shakespeare satirizes, insults and abuses the Jewish people as a whole, so by the wordââ¬â¢s very definition, that makes Shakespeare an anti-Semite. Insomnia free essay sample
A study of the various causes of and treatment for insomnia. This paper analyzes the different forms of insomnia transient, acute and chronic. It discusses the many possible causes, including: physical (muscle pain, headache, nasal congestion, diet, heat, cold), mental and emotional (depression, stress, anxiety) and the probable effects decreased efficiency and productivity , increased absenteeism and risks of accidents. The paper also suggests cures for this condition: herbal and homeopathic remedies, yoga, conventional medication antihistamines, sedatives. The writer claims that the ultimate approach to chronic insomnia lies within the person and his understanding of himself. Primary insomnia is defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as the difficulty of initiating or maintaining sleep or sleep of the non-restorative type for at least a month.(Espie 2002) Insomnia is transient when it lasts only for a few days to a few weeks, as when some temporary event or physical condition is responsible, such as an illness, changes in sleeping environment, work or family stress or jet lag. We will write a custom essay sample on Insomnia or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The cause or causes will pass or can be disposed of directly But when the disorder occurs between a month and six months, it is called acute insomnia, and beyond six months, it is chronic. This type is distinguished from the psychophysiologic insomnia in wakefulness, the circadian rhythm disorder in time alignment, the parasomnias and secondary insomnias. Insomnia that is more than transient cannot be effectively eliminated or remedied immediately or on the surface. The underlying root cause must be discovered and dealt with directly. This is because the bodys normal sleep pattern is disturbed when sleep becomes difficult or absent for more than a month, and the body adjusts to this new and irregular or poor pattern. Sedatives or some other approaches may address and calm the symptoms, but the sleeplessness will resurface only until the true cause is discovered and eliminated. Chronic insomnia is defined as the subjective experience of an inadequate quantity or quality of sleep that has persisted for at least one month. (qtd in Rajput Oct 1 1999: 1)

Compare and contrast two cities Essays
Compare and contrast two cities Essays Compare and contrast two cities Essay Compare and contrast two cities Essay The greatest celebration in Kazakhstan is called Nauriz Eve. There is a legend in Central Asia that every year during the night between the 21st and 22nd of March (the spring equinox), the wise elder Kadyr-Ata walks across the Earth. Kadyr-Ata brings people happiness and wealth, and he also possesses special magical powers. At three oclock in the morning, Kadyr-Ata opens the door to the sky and lets Spring come to the land. At this time, he breathes life into the earth; in essence he renews he earth from its dreadful winter state, and brings life back to spring. Nauryz symbolized the birth of a new year, cycle of life and Kazakhs came together to celebrate as a community. In Kazakhstan Nauryz is truly a social event. Now People in my country gather together at their main city, squares, where holiday organizers erect yurts, stages, and trading tents where crafts and goods are sold. Food is cooked on open fires in huge pots, and people dress festively. The roots of the holiday are ncient, and it is believed that the roots of Nauryz began at least 2000 years ago, most likely in Persia. Nauryz- is celebrated mostly in Muslim countries, but it is not a religious holiday. Nauryz is a traditional celebration of the spring equinox celebrated today by many nations throughout Asia and Europe, including Russia, Ukraine, Japan, and China There is a traditional belief that people will spend their new year in a manner similar to the way theyVe celebrated Nauryz. So, in the spirit of the season and a desire to have a comfortable year, people work hard to clean their homes, they wear their best clothing, and they cook a lot of delicious food. Indeed, the Nauryz table has important symbolism: the more food you have on your table, the better and more sufficient your life may be in the coming year. Nauryz is celebrated in every school in Kazakhstan, and has been since the downfall of the former Soviet Union. I remember the very first Nauryz in my school. We put insulation on the ground of our court (it was still pretty cool outside) and covered it with Kazakh rugs. Each grade decorated its own corner and every grade tried to organize a better table than all the others. It was almost a competition n whose table was richer! One of the grades even erected a real yurt right in the court of our school. In conclusion, these three countries celebrate their holidays in unusual and traditional ways, and this makes their culture unforgettable for all generations. Learn More About Georg Ohm and Ohms Law
Learn More About Georg Ohm and Ohm's Law Georg Simon Ohm was born in 1787 in Erlangen, Germany. Ohm came from a Protestant family. His father, Johann Wolfgang Ohm, was a locksmith and his mother, Maria Elizabeth Beck, was the daughter of a tailor. Had Ohms brothers and sisters all survived he would have been one of a large family but, as was common back then, several of the children died young. Only two of Georgs siblings survived, his brotherà Martinà who went on to become a well-known mathematician, and his sister Elizabeth Barbara. Although his parents had not been formally educated, Ohms father was a remarkable man who had educated himself and was able to give his sons an excellent education through his own teachings. Education and Early Work In 1805, Ohm entered the University of Erlangen and received a doctorateà and immediately joined the staff as a mathematics lecturer. After three semesters, Ohm gave up his university post. He could not see how he could attain a better status at Erlangen as prospects there were poor while he essentially lived in poverty in the lecturing post. The Bavarian government offered him a post as a teacher of mathematics and physics at a poor quality school in Bamberg and he took up the post there in January 1813. Ohmà wrote an elementary geometry book while teaching mathematics at several schools. Ohm began experimental work in a school physics laboratory after he had learned of the discovery of electromagnetism in 1820. In two important papers in 1826, Ohm gave a mathematical description of conduction in circuits modeled on Fouriers study of heat conduction. These papers continue Ohms deduction of results from experimental evidence and, particularly in the second, he was able to propose laws which went a long way to explaining results of others working on galvanic electricity. Ohm's Law Using the results of his experiments, Ohm was able to define the fundamental relationship between voltage, current, and resistance. What is now knownà as Ohms law appeared in his most famous work, a book published in 1827 that gave his complete theory ofà electricity. The equation I V/R is known as Ohmââ¬â¢s Law. It states that the amount of steady current through a material is directly proportional to the voltage across the material divided by the electrical resistance of the material. The ohm (R), a unit of electrical resistance, is equal to that of a conductor in which a current (I) of one ampere is produced by a potential of one volt (V) across its terminals. These fundamental relationships represent the true beginning of electrical circuit analysis. Current flows in an electric circuit in accordance with several definite laws. The basic law of current flow is Ohms law. Ohms law states that the amount of current flowing in a circuit made up of only resistors is related to the voltage on the circuit and the total resistance of the circuit. The law is usually expressed by the formula V IR (described in the above paragraph), where I is the current in amperes, V is voltage (in volts), and R is the resistance in ohms. The ohm, a unit of electrical resistance, is equal to that of a conductor in which a current of one ampere is produced by a potential of one volt across its terminals.
